Yeah, I guess you would call that "batch mode" text processing, with run after run to get it right, versus today's interactive WYSIWYG approach.

When I got my own PC in 1989 (finally) one of the programs I bought was WordPerfect 5.1. I was on DOS and WP ran in DOS mode. The default screen was a blue character mode screen. Initially there wasn't even mouse support.

Anyway, one really interesting aspect of Wordperfect back then was that you could see in some of Wordperfect's functions the antecedent technology of nroff and similar tools. Wordperfect had a "reveal codes" function that would display the formatting codes in your document. If you turned off that reveal codes mode you'd get a WYSIWIGish (but not really) editing display. It felt a bit inspired by nroff type tools.
