All Technology & Tech Help / Secure Digital memory cards?
« on: November 18, 2002, 08:44:59 am »
Hi,

Are there any "problems" with the new Secure Digital format being pushed for flash memory cards? IE, is there any issue that a consumer & non OEM user should be concerned about?

A friend claimed recently that the digital cameras he was considering buying his dad for christmas all used SD, and not compact flash with which he was familiar. I looked around and I couldn't see anything negative about SD except that SD is yet another format and won't play with non SD devices. The HP digicam I just bought my wife uses SD too (found that one out after getting it home.)

A secondary "concern" with SD is the security. How does it work? I assume that SD has some kind of internal encryption and password at the interface level that can be applied if the product using it supports security. Are SD security features exposed in consumer products like low end digicams? (This guy was concerned that his dad would get sucked into a techie vortex if something like a password were exposed.)

The only format that appears to be one worth avoiding due to heavy proprietary issues and cost is the memory stick. I view the several formats (SD, CF, and Smartmedia) as different incompatible flavors but comparable....

Opinions?

I'll kick it off with two. The first one from a newsgroup that almost made me "spoo" my coffee, the second one spontaneously emoted by moi in a fit of unusual insight.

#1. Neil Diamond is to lyric writing ("I am I said/To no one there/not even the chair") what William Shatner is to acting.

#2. Lexx is Lost in Space with boobs.

Help me out, people...

All Technology & Tech Help / Re: Collecting Data Remotely
« on: October 19, 2002, 06:15:01 am »
Are we talking about logging keystrokes, or are we talking about logging higher level application functions?

There are several 'spy' applications on the market that log all user activity from keystrokes. The problem with this would be assembling those keystrokes into a context and knowing which application was running, etc during each keystroke.

As far as logging application functions, the way I would probably approach this would be to embed calls into applications that send TCP/IP messages to a remote collection point that describe the functions that were performed.

It seems tough to do this 'generically'.

JTGalt,

Thanks for the confirmation of what I was seeing.

Here is what I did to get back online immediately.  Ever hear of the free public DNS service @ soa.granitecanyon.com/ ?

I pointed my ISDN router's secondary DNS address at the address of Granite Canyon's primary DNS server!! And it works!

Yeah, I know that's not really what their service is for. Their service is meant for domain hosts. (or IS this what it's for?) This feels like it's in the same category as using duct tape on a broken radiator hose...

Works for me, though.

All of a sudden this morning my ISP can't seem to find anything under Ezboard, including Open IT. It's as though DNS at my ISP isn't working, but just for Ezboard.

I tried pinging Ezboard from a shell account on my web hosts' account (which is a totally separate provider from my ISP) by domain name, and it works. It tells me that my ISP can't see the DNS entries for Ezboard, at very least.

I can also bring up the main view of Open IT with a numeric IP address, also lending credence to a DNS issue. Problem is, when I try to go to any section, the link is formed with the pub21.ezboard.com address and it fails to load the new page.

To post this, I am using "someone's" free web proxy that I got from an online list. I am very uncomfortable doing this... I don't want to get an "unexpected bill"... or a court summons... :rolleyes

I'm asking here because my ISP's tech support seem like wankers, and therefore I probably need some advice on what the prob "sounds like" so they get pointed in the right direction.

Anyone? Thanks.
