All Technology & Tech Help / Did you ever visit the Dark Web?
« on: April 27, 2018, 03:04:59 pm »
I keep getting an offer from Norton for a dark web scan.  I know they're doing it so they can sell me on a Lifelock subscription, but if I did do the scan to see if my email is out there, how concerned should I be if it is?  Couldn't I just change my email password and be ok?

At this point, there has been so many data hacks, I would think just about everyone's email address would be out there.  There have been big hacks for years to get people's identities.  I wonder how many people really were affected.

Still, identity theft is very scary.

All Technology & Tech Help / Stuck in a hotel with public wifi
« on: March 03, 2018, 02:12:07 pm »
My husband and I are living in a hotel right now. I'm not sure I should login through their network so I'm using my phone. It's more convenient to use my laptop though so is there a way to secure it better if you're in a hotel?  The hotel is trying to accommodate people in my area and they can't help me. I'm lucky to have a room. What about temporary passwords just good for a session?  Any ideas?

All Technology & Tech Help / Being blacklisted by Google for your opinion
« on: February 27, 2018, 05:30:52 pm »
James DaMore recently disagreed with Google, his employer at the time, with their diversity policies.  He said women aren't as interested in software engineering and there was discrimination against conservative white men.  This article explains what happened.

He is now unemployable because Google is so pervasive in the tech world.  It seems like in order to have a job in silicon valley or a lot of startups, you can't be on the outs with Google, like this guy is.

Apparently Google owns everything and you better not cross them or you will end up where James DaMore is now.

All Technology & Tech Help / How do you stop spam phonecalls?
« on: September 11, 2017, 03:35:24 pm »
I have an IPhone 4S.  Okay, I know its old, but even though I can block the spam calls its a game of whack a mole.  Does anyone out there have a solution that is better than the standard stuff offered by Apple?  I read about Truecaller that is community based, but don't know if its any good.

Discussions - Public / Eclipse Viewing
« on: August 20, 2017, 04:07:33 pm »
Gorn, if you'll be there tomorrow there will be good eclipse viewing.  You should be able to see it pretty near 100% totality.  That will be very cool.  I might try the pinhole viewer with a box.  I did that when I was a kid and we had a partial eclipse.  It worked, but most likely I'll watch it on TV.

I'm going to pray for healing for our country and the world during that time.  We need divine intervention at this point because there is so much hate everywhere.  Its all pure poison.  I don't know if there is anything we can do to change hearts and minds aside from prayer.

I can't listen to most media anymore.  I just view headline news, no opinion.  All of it is just sickening and has to stop.

This is a very exciting initiative by the Trump Administration.  I remember back in the 70's when there were a lot of apprenticeship programs for people to go into fields that required expertise, but not a 4 year degree.  This makes total sense to me and is a great idea.  These jobs pay just as much money as many STEM jobs.

Something is terribly wrong with society.  These people have a convention every year in Las Vegas.

I just can't imagine what these people are thinking.

I'm not a Linux pro, but I've managed Windows servers and can't believe anything like this could happen and the data would be unrecoverable.

Discussions - Public / Do you have a tablet?
« on: December 20, 2015, 01:09:55 pm »
I have a desktop, a laptop and iPhone, yet none of them are as convenient as a tablet.  I like to read books and use Kindle for the PC right now.  It works, but it isn't comfortable.  Having my 17" screen laptop on my lap isn't comfortable for reading either.

I'd love to have a real book, but don't want to store them.  Is it better to buy a cheap Kindle for reading or go for a tablet that can do more but it costs more?  Some people I know claim Kindle is better than any other tablet for reading books.

Any thoughts?

This is a cool video montage of the TV shows many of us grew up with.  Its a real walk down memory lane.
