Discussions - Public / How do I embed a statement in a picture?
« on: June 03, 2018, 01:57:27 am »
I know my ex browses my fb page. I do not want to *hide* a statement, I am not talking about all these digital tricks, but obscure, Kinda like you have to look at it for 2 minutes to begin to see it. Hidden within some other design would be the words, the letters. Perhaps something short.

But not immediately "jump at you"

You get my vibe, I hope.

It's the series about the Unabomb set in the mid 90's of course. (Note the correct spelling, later changed by Media to Unabomber)

But that's not what I am writing about. I am writing about the hazardous work conditions for the contractor, the linguistics guy who was analyzing the manifesto. Good God, it's just like IT.  I think the show nailed it to a "T".  They tell him he is a piece of sheet every other day and replaceable, and even after he cracks they case, they are skeptical.

The irony of it all he goes living in the woods after catching the Unabomb (minus the bombs)

Plus tons of linguistics, which I love.

Watch it!!!

I have my own opinion but wanted to hear other reports from the trenches.

I see a lot of sales, a lot of discounts on everything which suggests people aren't spending.

20% off on this, 25% off on that. On everything. Automotive, clothing, household and in private sales as well.

Discussions - Public / Men's support forums
« on: May 06, 2018, 10:40:46 am »
So I read this man's divorce forum, every time I visit I have a feeling I've swam in a public toilet. One of those outdoor units on a hot summer day. This has been the case for the last 10 years.
There is nowhere near the degree of support, empathy, encouragement that women receive from one another on their support communities that thrive.

There are several members there that are the male version of Debbie the Downer from Saturday Night Life. Only there to tell you how you have no plan, how you screwed up, should have know this or that 8 years ago, etc. - all under the facade of offering "support". And I think he is one of the original members in that community. They are sitting there round the clock doing Debbie the Downer thing. You leave thinking WTF. You leave in worse shape than before.

I really don't know what it is. Envy? that I am about to win the case and they are all stuck with generous 2 weekends per month and a "Thursday dinner"?

I hate to say but men are F** retarded when it comes to mutual support.
Pick any other area it the same holds. Family court or IT consulting.

I am just embarrassed of my own gender. I am. We are men and we are idiots.
Women are superior to us in terms of emotional intelligence, intuition and perception. That is why they win 80% of the time in the family court where brute force IQ that men have does not count whatsoever.

Not that this is earth-moving revelation but I use the following:

As a search engine, duckduckgo  - sometimes StartPage

As my email platform, protonmail dot com

As my text messenger, Signal

As my other messenger, Telegram

Never-say-anything, you people taking notes??

I need to completely get myself out of that yahoo BS.

Getting old means your son has an instagram account and you have no idea what Instagram is.

Or snapchat.

I think I can make it for another 44 years without it.

Various middle eastern names, Java programmers, etc for sale.

Damn. They are marketing them like sunflower seeds at a middle eastern Bazaar.

Haven't seen yet how bad it is but I am guessing a few inches of snow if that? It's mainly ice that's the concern.

Discussions - Public / Messengers - viber, telegram, whatsapp, etc?
« on: March 05, 2018, 04:10:42 pm »

Anybody use these mobile device messengers such as viber and telegram? Whatsapp is supposedly the most popular in the world.
Signal is endorsed by Snowden and it replaces your standard text messenger but I am not sure if they charge you for international messaging, or it's free. It appears to be free as voice-over-IP, not a text message.

All of them are encrypted.

Most if not all of these have desktop versions.

The advantage is, stuck in an international airport somewhere, you can send messages for free instead of paying so many cents per minute for a text or phone call. Yeah, you can also make free phone calls via viber and the rest of them. Whatsapp does video.

Discussions - Public / My expectations from this forum
« on: March 04, 2018, 05:39:30 pm »
This is not completely OT.  I think of this forum as a once a week gathering of consultants to engage in shop talk, clients and misc items. Such as the current political climate. Which is really inseparable from the aforementioned issues. Who gets elected and who directs the budget has a direct impact upon your current and future gigs.  Then there is the ever-present H1 Visa issue. That too is political to the Nth degree.

But "shop talk" bores me most of the time, including technical stuff. I am up to my eyeballs in it during the week and after 17:00 hours it's anything but shop talk, please. I suspect 99% of "computer consultants" feel the same way. Who wants to extend the workday to 22:00 hours or so and think about that stuff? Well, the most dedicated, that's who. The rock-star type consultants.

I would rather talk about gardening, V8 chebby engine mods or just some random complaint about something. Usually social or political in nature.

If auto repair mechanics got together on weekends, I doubt very much  they would talk about spark plug gaps or which ratchet is better, snap-on or Craftsman. Usually  such conversations quickly degrade towards obscene subjects. Much as in our case. I think 90% of the stuff posted here over the years has no direct relevance to the field, but that's OK. We do have a common denominator.

I am trying not to think about IT at all after 4:30PM, I mentally and completely check out. If I do, I risk damage to my sanity.  I am just overly, completely saturated in that feces. I need a breath of fresh air. Would you hang out with your co-workers after hours?

*sigh*

I enjoy reading some of the posts here, it's like reading a book at times and you can comment if you have to.  I am also frustrated with the idiot contigent of IT people, they take so little initiative about anything. I don't feel there is a "we", or "us".

I went to this computer consultants meeting when I worked in Milwaukee, it was downright hostile. The vibe was, No, I will not tell you about any clients who engage in X, Y or Z. Let's talk about the current football game on TV (it was in a sports bar setting).  They just royally pissed me off. I was the most junior member there and there were only about 2 people present. Sadly, this is a good representation of the field in general. Nobody collaborates or shares or supports fellow team members. It's lone-wolf type tactic and every man for himself. Even when they do get together, meaningful information exchange stays on a very token level.

A forum such as this one is great in theory and practice. But a local FTF based forum is another good idea if we could exchange clients contacts and info and stuff, something business-oriented and all in the context of a "fun" after hours water cooler type discussion, highly informal. But I don't know anything and even if I did, I could predict their behavior. Which would be downright hostile or resentful.  They literally don't want you to succeed. When I think of such engagements, I think of a watering hole in Africa, you know the type where they set up time-lapse cams. You see zebras fighting lions and elephants for their chance at a limited resource - our field is exactly the same.
The olde Janet's forum was a perfect example of a poisoned water hole that it was.   I got the constant condescending vibe of this F-ing kid, we don't want you to succeed so let's hammer this nail in. *This* forum is better - actually much better. But.

The level of social cohesiveness royally sucks. But I don't think it's a thing that's exclusive to the IT field.   Come to think of it's it's like that in  every field. Plumbers are the same way.  And likely in every country in the world.

All Technology & Tech Help / MSI Gaming laptops
« on: February 24, 2018, 09:05:34 am »

Not my pic but I have this model. GT80. Loaded with 4 SSDs and other cool stuff. Technically the machine is from 2015 but I got it new last year. Boots in 20 seconds and is pretty fast.

The mechanical keyboard kicks ass. I just love the clicketty clack.  I could type all day on it.  My only complaint it's not 4K but it's a moot point because I run a 4K device connected via HDMI.  And with 1080, you do get better battery life.

Computer as in hardware developments and news and what the next great thing will be. Case in point, SSD, processors, monitors and stuff.
Cryptocurrency seems to be a permanent part of the IT landscape.

What is that bit about processor flaw I see floating around.

Sick to death of political forums.
