I've been contracting almost as long as the original poster: 16 years. I got started contracting because of an abusive employer. So-called "real jobs" can truly suck.

As contractors, though, we have had enough affirming work experiences to be comparatively immune to those dysfunctional corporate cultures. For years, we contractors have lived without any employment rights, so our clients can fire us for any reason, at any time. We've had to perform, technically and socially. We succeeded. We're proven. Some manager makes it her mission to put me down? That's a reflection on her, not me. True, there may be some real world implications, like (if a FTE) I get a 2% raise instead of 3%. Big whoop.

I may be wrong. It's been a long time since I worked for a salary. I think that if someone tried to pull those corporate headgames on me, I'd just smile and say "Excuse me, are you done, because I've got some work to get done here?!"

I don't think an ex-contractor would have the same experience as a life-long FTE, when taking a salaried job. I think the ex-contractor would be more effective.

Those immunizing, baptism-by-fire experiences that "career" contractors must go through is a definite plus in our favor. The crap that we face as contractors is 50x the personal risk and "mindfrench" that one would see as an employee. That definitely lowers the personal misery index.

(Which, in some ways, makes us all the more 'undesirable' by many bidness owner's lights... since we're not easily manipulable.)

Your post reminded me of all kinds of crap.  One of my managers when I was in accounting used to assign us mechanical pencils.  You get orange, someone had blue, another red.  Drove him crazy that I never used a pencil.

I've been United Way'd as well.  I was one of only 2 people in a department of 20 who didn't offer up part of his salary.  I bet that my name came across a level 2 or level 3 manager type.  A level 2 manager was big time.  He or she was actually responsible for a whole line on the balance sheet.  F..., it wsa such a big deal that the president probably knew about my trouble making patterns.  Oh yeah, I was an 03 in their world which was just above an 04 (went to 07 but I never knew when I was meeting one of them) and below an 02.  We all had grades in that famous Bay Area oil company, now merged, and with a red and blue logo.

Another company I worked for abitrarily made us work our days off.  Either you did it, or, you didn't come to work anymore.  It was that simple and equally as direct.  No extra pay either.  Come to think of it, I've seen that one more than once.
